This is a strange and wonderful amalgamation featuring audio from interviews on the Duncan Trussell Family Hour. Excerpts from the interviews become dialogue for the trippy, psychedelic worlds animate by AdventureTime creator Pendleton Ward.
The Midnight Gospel follows a spacecaster (video podcaster in space) named Clancy Gilroy who lives in a dimension called “The Chromatic Ribbon”, where simulation farmers use powerful bio-computers to simulate universes to harvest technology. Each episode revolves around Clancy’s travels through planets within the simulator, with the beings inhabiting these worlds as the guests he interviews for his spacecast.
These interviews are based on the real interviews derived from the DTFH.
My favorite episode is the finale of Season One. Trussell interviews his own mother in the final stages of cancer. She is in essence talking her son through the mysteries of life and death and holding his hand through her own exit. Ward’s animation connects their story to the bigger picture of our existence as we witness them alternating dying, each taking turns at parenting the other. The outcome is profoundly moving, not just for its real-life story but for how masterfully all collaborators add some piece of the puzzle that makes a perfect work.
