Why did it take 2 years to premiere?

From the Houston Chronicle:

Time always flies forward if you’re Trey McIntyre. This spring, though, the popular and peripatetic American choreographer also senses some déjà vu.

He’ll be back at Houston Ballet soon for the long-awaited premiere of “Pretty Things,” a dance he created with the company more than two years ago.

The all-male cast was primed for an opening in March 2020. The costumes and sets, by Thomas Mika, sparkled. Photos taken during the last dress rehearsal offer a tantalizing glimpse of a disco-ball spectacle. McIntyre had even handed out what he calls his “merde gifts” to the dancers; custom-made merit badges he designs for each of his new ballets.

He still can’t believe the ballet and Wortham Theater Center had to cancel opening night, turning “Pretty Things” into a more uncertain thing as COVID-19 lockdowns spread across the world. “It was like, this isn’t happening,” McIntyre says. The premiere was initially postponed until that May. Then May passed, and then the whole next season.

Returning to the dance brings some closure to the upheaval, he says. “To have a culmination attached to it — this is the beginning, middle and end — feels fortunate but also kind of emotional.”

McIntyre has always had a knack for presenting lemons as lemonade.

What is the music?

Tell me more...

This program of Houston-born ballets showcases Houston Ballet’s continued tradition of supporting the world’s most respected choreographers, featuring works by Jorma Elo, Christopher Bruce and Trey McIntyre.

Elo’s ONE|end|ONE reflects the dance maker’s quirky and unexpected movements to create an atmosphere of playfulness. Bruce’s Hush is a comic and moving celebration of life set to the music of Yo-Yo Ma and Bobby McFerrin.

McIntyre’s Pretty Things, set to music by David Bowie, features the men of Houston Ballet and explores peacocking behavior among male dancers. Experience this wide collection of choreographic talent, all in one blockbuster performance.
